Developing Cultural Competency

American Muslims and the Workplace

Designed for executive officers, human resource managers, diversity professionals and other corporate leaders, this seminar provides valuable information and resources for increasing employee performance by improving communications and teamwork among people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This seminar, led by Maha Elgenaidi, President of Islamic Networks Group, begins with a conversation about common stereotypes and other barriers faced by Muslims in the workplace citing Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports and other experiences in a post 9/11 workplace environment. This will be followed by an overview of Muslim traditions and practices, pertinent contemporary issues, and their implications for Muslim employees, co-workers as well as clients. The seminar will also address tips and strategies for preventing discrimination, as well steps towards building an inclusive and productive work environment for everyone.

The afternoon session will be followed by a Guided Tour of the Islamic Center, including the Mosque, and conclude with a dinner and panel discussion “Inclusion, Religion, Effectiveness and the Workplace”.  Facilitated by Dr. James Buchanan, Xavier Brueggeman Center for Dialogue, the business leaders on the interfaith panel will include Helen Tucker, Global Director for diversity and inclusion at P & G, Lynnette Heard, CEO of BRIDGES for a Just Community, Jessica Baron, Sr. Director of Leadership Programs Cincinnati Chamber and Maha Elgenaidi, President of ING., and engage in a discussion around best practices of diversity, inclusion and leadership in the workplace.
